A Chair Can’t be Scary …. Can it?

You better believe it can! This is a true story and my then boyfriend (now husband) can back me up on this! 16 years ago I was still living at home with my parents, well more like house sitting as they were snow birds. For years every one of my family members knew that the house was “off” to put it midly. It was something we all just knew, we never talked about it to anyone outside the family until the person in question got a taste of the house first hand. This is the incident where my future hubby got his introduction to the weirdness of my childhood home.

We were laying on the couch in the basement, spooning while watching a flick as couple often do in the late evenings. Everything was perfectly calm. We were just starting to doze off when we both heard a loud “whoosing” sound. We both look up and VOILA, the rocking chair that had been sitting beniegnly beside the couch had come around 45 degrees and was facing directly at us. It took a minute to register what exactly had just happened. I was perplexed for a moment but was just going to go back to watching TV because as I mentioned, I knew the house was “off”. My partner however jumped off the couch with a loud “WTF?!”. I shrugged and responded with a “What?”. He stared at me and said as calmly as he could manage “The g** D*** chair moved, it’s f******* staring at us.”

It was about a week later that we found ourselves in our first apartment and never spent the night at my childhood home again. My parents sold the house a few years ago but the rocking chair is still in a storage unit. As soon as I can find the room I think I’m going to go get it. Having something a little “off” would be fun to have around again I think.
